BREAKING: Carmelo Anthony’s Jordan Melo 5.5 Returning in 2027

Jordan Brand is continuing its recent embrace of basketball nostalgia by bringing back one of Carmelo Anthony’s earliest signature sneakers. Sneaker News can confirm that the Jordan Melo 5.5 is set to return in 2027, marking the first retro release of the model that originally debuted on Black Friday in 2005.

Fresh off being selected third overall in the legendary 2003 NBA Draft, Melo became Jordan Brand’s first-ever signature basketball athlete, laying the foundation for future stars who would eventually headline the Jumpman roster. His early signature line also followed an unconventional path; rather than launching with entirely original silhouettes, the Jordan Melo 1.5 blended design elements from the Air Jordan 1 and Air Jordan 2, while the Melo 5.5 drew directly from the Air Jordan 5 and Air Jordan 6.

In a recent episode of his 7PM In Brooklyn podcast, Carmelo reveals that he wanted to be “the 0.5 athlete” to build upon the existing legacy. It wasn’t until the Melo M3 that Anthony’s signature franchise adopted its own identity and conventional numbering system, eventually growing into the Melo M14 (see Melo’s full Jordan shoe history).

When the Jordan Melo 5.5 first released during the 2005 holiday season, it quickly became one of the year’s standout basketball launches, garnering a ton of popularity nationwide. The debut colorway featured black nubuck uppers accented by the Denver Nuggets’ signature University Blue across the outsole, midfoot windows, interior lining, and Melo logo embroidered at the heel. Nuggets gold completed the palette behind the tongue and on the heel Jumpman, while a metallic silver hangtag doubled as a collectible booklet detailing the shoe’s design. It is considered to be one of the best Jordan Brand footwear models outside of the Air Jordan lineage.

More than two decades later, Anthony remains one of Jordan Brand’s most recognizable ambassadors. Through his podcast, frequent appearances throughout the New York Knicks’ 2026 championship run and parade, and his continued presence around the game alongside his son Kiyan, Melo has remained deeply connected to both longtime basketball fans and a new generation discovering his legacy.
