New Balance Adds Armor Plating On The 1890

New Balance has dropped off countless new models this year. With all that “newness” on the shelves, it’s a bit tough to parse which ones are the real spotlight products. Reading between the lines, the New Balance 1890 is no doubt a silhouette that the brand has positioned for success via top-tier collabs with Action Bronson, Stone Island, Joe Freshgoods, and JJJJound, as well as a pre-baked offshoot in the 1890A that only trailed the parent model’s release by a few months.

With a few mainline editions out of the way, that spirit of experimentation returns. We present you to the New Balance 1890P (plated), a subtler tweak than the aforementioned moc-like model, but one that brings new energy all the same. In mashing up the 890v3 runner and the archival 2002, thinned-out, synthetic materiality became a defining feature. The New Balance 1890P makes its greatest impact by creating a bulkier, firmer overall profile. The lateral forefoot overlays are pronouncedly thicker, creating almost the feel of armor, while leather takes over the teardrop backing at the heel.

To accentuate these new hardware choices, New Balance reaches for two vibrant colorways, united in their color-blocking schemes that contrast that frontmost section with varying purple shades. Obviously, when you zoom out on either one, the rest of the shoe embraces more of a flooded concept, “Fairweather Blue” on the cooler pair and “Team Red” on its warmer counterpart.

These two colorways of the New Balance 1890P are listed for an August 19th release via overseas retailers; whether that’ll apply stateside is currently unclear.
