Much as we’ve discussed New Balance’s rapid introduction of new models, we should cage that claim a bit. To their credit, the Boston brand has done well to balance its fresh inductees across disparate categories; though the 204L and Gator Run may each be fashion-forward, they offer different aesthetics within those bounds. Save for the New Balance 2011, which could be counted out for its collab status, it’s been a bit since another suede-and-mesh tech runner has stepped into the fold.
It has stopped short of a full sell-out in its debut colorways, but the New Balance 1954R seems to be experiencing a warm reception for leaning on the Boston brand’s strengths in that realm. After leaning on simple monochromatics for its opening salvo, pairs #4 and #5 showcase how the silhouette can handle a bit more expression.
The brighter pair stacks up white leather throughout its dense, layered upper before building a ton of visual intrigue into its sole. Aquamarine ombrés collide with a slew of rosy pinks, earthy browns, and pale oranges to achieve that “tropical” aspect. Its counterpart takes an equal but opposite approach, ditching the gradients and opting for a stacked run of pastels in its sole unit, beginning with aquatic traction before jumping to rosy ABZORB pods and a yellow midsole.
The New Balance 1954R in these two colorways has already appeared on retailer calendars for a September 1st release. Expect the silhouette’s base $190 retail price upon arrival.
